The Iowa Freedom Rock was one man’s quest to honor America’s Veterans. The artist, Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II, was inspired by the movie Saving Private Ryan, as well as, wanting to give Veterans a unique recognition on Memorial Day. Started in 1999, the last rock was complete in 2017 so there is now a rock in each of Iowa’s 99 counties.
