Took a short stroll along the Homer Spit near where we were staying with the RV. Wanted to get a little local exploration in before the rain settled in the area.
The Homer Spit is a 4.5-mile-long, narrow strip of land located at the southern end of Kachemak Bay, Alaska. It is a remnant of an ancient glacial moraine, constantly reshaped by ocean currents. Archaeological finds suggest that the Spit was used by people long before written history.
Currently the spit has a paved road and a paved biking/walking trail all the way to the end where the Lands End Resort is located. Next to that is the Homer Spit RV Park. It’s not the most picturesque of parks and it’s mostly build up from an old gravel parking lot but it has some pull through full hookup spots, lots of electric only sites, and a few no amenity sites right next to the beach. The RV park isn’t the destination; the spit and the shops, stores, and restaurants are where it’s at and the RV park lets you camp right next to all of it!
It’s all available here in Homer; fishing trips (especially Halibut; Homer is the Halibut capital of the world!), sightseeing trips, bear viewing flights to several locations in Katmai National Park, bird watching, whale watching, so many shops that tourists should be able to find something to bring home with them to prove they were here!
